TLDR Epithelial grafting can effectively repigment white hair in vitiligo patients.
The study investigated the potential for repigmentation of white hair follicles in patients with vitiligo through epithelial grafting. Patients with stubborn vitiligo and hair pigment loss underwent treatment using Chinese cupping blisters or ultrathin Thiersch grafting, followed by phototherapy. Results showed that skin repigmentation occurred within 1 to 2 months of phototherapy, and hair follicle recoloring was observed after 4 to 11 months. The unexpected repigmentation of hair was attributed to the stimulation and migration of melanocyte stem cells to the hair bulbs. The study concluded that epithelial grafting could be an effective treatment for vitiligo with poliosis, especially when white hair tufts cause cosmetic concerns.
