Defining a Region of the Human Keratin 6a Gene That Confers Inducible Expression in Stratified Epithelia of Transgenic Mice

    Kenzo Takahashi, Pierre A. Coulombe
TLDR The human keratin 6a gene's specific sequences trigger expression in skin layers after injury.
The study investigated the regulatory sequences of the human keratin 6a (K6a) gene responsible for inducible expression in stratified epithelia following injury. Using transgenic mice, researchers found that the proximal 960 base pairs of the 5'-upstream sequence of the K6a gene were sufficient to induce beta-galactosidase expression in response to epidermal injury and chemical treatments known to induce K6 expression. The critical regulatory sequences for this inducibility were located between -960 and -550 base pairs, with enhancer elements influencing activity found between -2500 and -5200 base pairs. These findings highlighted the specific genetic elements involved in the gene expression response to epithelial injury.

A gel of keratin microspheres promotes hair follicle growth, showing similar effectiveness to minoxidil in mice. The treatment activates hair growth pathways and reduces inflammation, with potential applications in drug delivery for hair-related disorders.

Keratin microspheres may offer additional mechanisms to combat hair loss compared to minoxidil. The process to create these microspheres is relatively simple and can be done at home with basic equipment.

OP is considering using a keratin gel to improve hair quality and is concerned about its safety and visual impact on a slightly balding crown. Users discuss shampoo frequency, with some suggesting less frequent use for better hair health, but OP prefers regular shampoo and conditioner for silky hair.
