TLDR People with alopecia areata often have lower vitamin D levels than healthy people.
The systematic review and meta-analysis conducted on studies published until July 2018 found that patients with alopecia areata had significantly lower levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D compared to healthy controls. The meta-analysis included 11 studies with a total of 916 patients and revealed a pooled mean difference in serum vitamin D levels of -9.55 (95% confidence interval: -10.51 to -8.59) with high heterogeneity (I2=85%). The results suggest that vitamin D deficiency is more common in individuals with alopecia areata and that there is a trend towards lower vitamin D levels in more severe cases of the condition.
