TLDR The C-allele and CC-genotype in the PTPN22 gene lower the risk of alopecia areata.
The study investigated the association between the rs2476601 polymorphism in the PTPN22 gene and the risk of developing alopecia areata (AA) through a meta-analysis of 5 case-control studies involving 1,129 AA patients and 1,702 healthy controls. The findings indicated that the rs2476601 SNP was significantly associated with AA susceptibility, with carriers of the C-allele and CC-genotype having a lower risk of developing AA. Despite limitations such as a limited number of studies, potential publication bias, and a predominance of Caucasian populations, the study provided valuable insights into the genetic underpinnings of AA and suggested the need for further large-scale, multi-center studies across different ethnicities.
