TLDR Combining PRP with hydroquinone is more effective for treating melasma than using hydroquinone alone.
This study involving 112 patients compared the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) combined with 4% hydroquinone versus 4% hydroquinone alone in treating melasma. Group A, which received PRP and hydroquinone, showed a greater reduction in the modified Melasma Area and Severity Index (mMASI) score, from 4.04 to 1.53, compared to Group B, which decreased from 3.89 to 2.26. Group A also reported higher patient satisfaction and a statistically significant better response, with 32.1% showing excellent improvement compared to 12.5% in Group B. The study concluded that the combination of PRP and hydroquinone is more effective than hydroquinone alone for melasma treatment, although further research with larger sample sizes is recommended.
