TLDR Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) may be a safe and effective treatment for hair loss caused by Alopecia Areata.
The document discusses the use of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) in treating Alopecia Areata (AA), a condition causing hair loss. Traditional treatments for AA include intralesional and topical steroids, as well as oral immunotherapy, but these can have side effects and be inconvenient. PRP, an autologous preparation of concentrated platelets, is emerging as a therapy for various conditions, including hair loss. The paper presents a case of a 71-year-old woman with AA who had not responded to topical steroids and had adverse events with topical minoxidil use. After three treatments with PRP injections at the clinic, she experienced total hair regrowth without relapse six months after treatment cessation. This case demonstrates that PRP can be an effective, rapid, and safe treatment option for AA, especially for patients unresponsive to standard therapies or concerned about the side effects of oral medications.
