TLDR Lower baseline prolactin levels may lead to better insulin resistance improvement with metformin in PCOS patients.
This retrospective study focused on 75 overweight/obese women with PCOS and insulin resistance, examining the impact of metformin treatment over 6-8 months. It found that women with baseline prolactin levels ≤14.9 ng/mL experienced a more significant reduction in insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and an increase in prolactin levels compared to those with higher baseline prolactin levels. Both groups showed significant declines in the LH:FSH ratio, but no significant differences in SHBG dynamics were observed. The study suggests that baseline prolactin levels may influence the metabolic response to metformin in PCOS patients, though further research with larger populations is needed to confirm these findings.
