TLDR Probiotic supplements may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in women with PCOS.
This randomized clinical trial involved 90 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and examined the effects of an 8-week supplementation with probiotics Lactobacillus helveticus and Bifidobacterium longum. The study found significant improvements in the intervention group, including increased sex hormone binding globulin, total antioxidant capacity, and superoxide dismutase activity, along with decreased free androgen index, C-reactive protein, and malondialdehyde levels, compared to the placebo group. However, changes in testosterone levels and clinical symptoms such as acne, alopecia, and hirsutism were not statistically significant. The findings suggest that probiotic supplementation may help alleviate oxidative stress, modulate hormonal factors, and reduce inflammation in women with PCOS.
