TLDR Functional foods and nutrients like flavonoids, vitamin D, omega-3s, and probiotics can boost brain health and reduce stress.
This review examines the potential of functional food nutrients and neurosteroids to enhance brain health by improving stress resilience and addressing neurological disorders. Key nutrients like flavonoids, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin D improve blood-brain barrier function and inhibit oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. Flavonoids activate the Nrf2 pathway, upregulating antioxidant genes that protect against neurotoxicity. Neurosteroids such as DHEA and allopregnanolone play crucial roles in brain function, with their interaction with nutrients offering therapeutic strategies for CNS disorders. The review emphasizes personalized nutritional approaches and the integration of neurosteroids with functional nutrients as promising avenues for preventing or mitigating neuroinflammatory cascades and associated nervous system disorders.
