TLDR Caffeine, niacinamide, and panthenol may improve hair growth, fullness, and healing when applied to the scalp.
In 2014, hair transplant specialists discussed the potential benefits of topical caffeine, niacinamide, and panthenol for hair growth and thickness. Caffeine, used in products like Hair Surge and Nioxin’s Diamax, was found to promote growth in human hair follicles of both genders and did not disrupt the hair cycle. Niacinamide, a form of niacin, increased hair fullness in a study with 60 female subjects experiencing hair loss. Panthenol, known for moisturizing and thickening hair, showed potential benefits for post-operative hair transplant patients due to its ability to improve wound healing. These findings were based on in vitro or topical application studies, and further research was suggested.
