TLDR The mud mask with 22.5% kaolin and pomegranate peel extract worked best.
The study investigated the formulation of a mud mask using red pomegranate peel extract, which contains gallic and ellagic acids known for inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production. Three formulations with varying kaolin base concentrations (19.5%, 22.5%, and 26.3%) were tested for their physical properties and tyrosinase inhibition activity. Formula 2, with a 22.5% kaolin base, showed the best results, characterized by a distinctive odor, thick brownish-green color, homogeneity, spreadability of 20.5863 cm², viscosity of 16040 cPs, pH of 5.86, and a drying time of 16.67 minutes. The tyrosinase inhibition activity was measured using IC50 values, with the extract showing an IC50 of 155.49 μg/mL. The study found significant differences in viscosity, pH, and drying time with varying kaolin concentrations (p<0.05).
