TLDR Polygoni Multiflori Radix may help reduce skin aging by lowering collagenase and elastase activity.
The study investigated the effects of Polygoni Multiflori Radix (PMR) on collagen metabolism and elastase activity in Hs68 human fibroblasts after UVB irradiation. While PMR did not increase collagen production, it significantly reduced collagenase activity to 50.2%, 8.2%, and 10.0% at concentrations of 10, 30, and 100 μg/ml, respectively. Additionally, elastase activities were significantly reduced to 75.2%, 40.3%, and 27.0% at concentrations of 10, 100, and 1000 μg/ml, respectively. These findings suggested that PMR could serve as a potential anti-aging ingredient in cosmetic herbal treatments due to its inhibitory effects on collagenase and elastase activity.
