TLDR Polyamines are important in deciding hair follicle stem cell behavior, affecting hair growth and loss.
The study from April 2020 investigated the role of polyamines in hair follicle stem cell (HFSC) fate decisions. It found that HFSCs had lower translation rates than progenitor cells, and that suppressing translation either by directly targeting the ribosome or depleting natural polyamines increased stemness. The study also identified N1-acetylspermidine as a new regulator of cell fate decisions, which could increase proliferation without reducing translation. This suggests that polyamines play a significant role in regulating stem cell fate decisions, with potential implications for hair growth and loss.

The 2015 Hair Research Congress concluded that stem cells, maraviroc, and simvastatin could potentially treat Alopecia Areata, topical minoxidil, finasteride, and steroids could treat Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia, and PTGDR2 antagonists could also treat alopecia. They also found that low-level light therapy could help with hair loss, a robotic device could assist in hair extraction, and nutrition could aid hair growth. They suggested that Alopecia Areata is an inflammatory disorder, not a single disease, indicating a need for personalized treatments.
