TLDR Photobiomodulation is an effective and safe treatment for increasing hair growth in people with hair loss.
The 2018 document reports that photobiomodulation (PBM) is a safe and FDA-cleared treatment for androgenetic alopecia (AGA), with devices like HairMax® LaserComb, iGrow®, and Capillus® showing positive results in increasing hair density and counts. The largest studies have demonstrated a significant increase in hair density, particularly with the HairMax® LaserComb. PBM is believed to stimulate hair growth by altering the hair cycle, especially by promoting and possibly extending the anagen phase. Side effects are minimal, with pruritus and skin dryness being the most common. Despite the efficacy shown in randomized controlled studies, further research is necessary to establish the most effective treatment parameters and to assess the long-term benefits of PBM. The document also highlights the need for more data on the use of PBM for other types of alopecia and different hair types, as well as the challenges clinicians face regarding cost, patient compliance, and varying hair characteristics. Devices range in price from $295 to $3000 and are available for both home and clinical use.
