TLDR PCOS forum users view lifestyle changes and supplements positively, but have mixed feelings about contraceptive pills.
This study analyzed sentiment towards PCOS treatments using data from approximately 100,000 PCOS subreddit users. Lifestyle changes and supplements were generally viewed positively, with unspecified dieting and intermittent fasting being effective for weight loss. Inositol showed favorable outcomes, particularly for mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Conversely, combined oral contraceptive pills were linked to negative effects, including worsening depression and anxiety, though those with anti-androgenic progestins had better outcomes. The research highlights the potential of machine learning to extract valuable patient experience data from online forums, offering a new avenue for hypothesis generation and validation, though not replacing traditional clinical trials.
