TLDR Buffalo flies and Stephanofilaria nematodes cause severe skin lesions in beef cattle, and treatment should target both.
The study examined skin lesions in beef cattle caused by buffalo fly infestation, focusing on Stephanofilaria nematodes and bacteria. Out of 86 samples, 27 from north Queensland were positive for Stephanofilaria, while none from south Queensland were. Stephanofilaria-positive lesions were larger and had more severe damage, alopecia, and hyperkeratosis. Bacteria were found in 19 samples, with only two also positive for Stephanofilaria. The study concluded that both Stephanofilaria and bacteria contribute to lesion severity, but other factors like hypersensitivity to buffalo fly feeding and physical damage also play significant roles. Treatment targeting both buffalo flies and Stephanofilaria, possibly including bactericides, could be more effective.
