TLDR Mild oxidative stress can prevent hair loss from chemotherapy.
Chemotherapy often causes hair loss, leading to significant psychosocial trauma for patients. While scalp cooling can help, its effectiveness varies. This study in rats demonstrates that subcutaneous injections of hydrogen peroxide and cumene hydroperoxide can completely prevent hair loss from various chemotherapy classes. The peroxides induce cell cycle arrest through P53 activation, protecting hair follicles from chemotherapy's cytotoxic effects. This method could offer an effective and accessible way for cancer patients to preserve their quality of life during treatment.
