TLDR Improved finasteride formula allows slow, sustained release and better absorption for patients.
The study aimed to optimize a microstructured biodegradable finasteride formulation for depot parenteral application. The optimized formula showed a sustained release pattern with minimal initial burst release when injected into rabbits. The pharmacokinetic study revealed that the injected microspheres showed flip-flop pharmacokinetics with slow and sustained release from the polymeric blend and an increase in AUC and Tmax compared with the oral FIN suspension. The optimized formulation provides complete absorption from the injection site, with the intended slow-release pharmacokinetic profile that could possibly improve patient compliance.
