TLDR Nutraceuticals that promote hair growth do not reduce tamoxifen's effectiveness in breast cancer treatment.
This study investigated the effects of various nutraceuticals on breast cancer cell lines (MCF7, T47D, BT483) in the presence of estrogen and tamoxifen, a common breast cancer therapy that often causes hair loss. The nutraceuticals tested included Kelp, Astaxanthin, Saw Palmetto, Tocotrienols, Maca, Horsetail, Resveratrol, Curcumin, and Ashwagandha. Results showed that these nutraceuticals did not interfere with tamoxifen's inhibitory action on estrogen-stimulated DNA synthesis; some even enhanced tamoxifen's effects. The study also found that nutraceuticals increased ERβ expression and localized estrogen receptors around the nuclear periphery, suggesting a potential protective effect and a role in promoting hair growth. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and assess the safety and efficacy of using nutraceuticals as an adjuvant therapy for hair loss in breast cancer patients undergoing endocrine therapy.
