TLDR Hair density and thickness decrease in all scalp areas for East Asians with AGA.
This study analyzed the hair characteristics of nonbalding scalp zones in East Asian patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA). The study found that hair density and thickness were decreased in patients with AGA compared to healthy controls, and this difference was associated with BASP subtype and severity. The study suggests that all scalp hairs, including nonbalding regions, may be affected by AGA.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

Topical melatonin may help reduce hair loss and increase hair thickness in people with androgenetic alopecia (AGA), with some studies showing positive results. It can be mixed with minoxidil for application, and its effectiveness might be enhanced when used with micro-needling, but results may vary among individuals.

Creatine can cause increased hair loss in some people, particularly those with a predisposition to androgenic alopecia, but hair loss often stops after discontinuing its use. Some users experience no hair loss while using creatine.
