TLDR Early neurosteroid changes can alter adult brain function and behavior.
The study examined the effects of neonatal manipulation of allopregnanolone (AlloP) on adult neurosteroid infusions in the hippocampus and their impact on open field behavior in rats. It was observed that neonatal AlloP administration reduced the effects of adult AlloP infusions on locomotor activity but enhanced the effects of pregnenolone sulphate (PregS). Conversely, neonatal finasteride administration diminished the effects of both AlloP and PregS infusions in adulthood. These results indicated that early neurosteroid manipulations led to enduring neurobiological changes in the hippocampus, affecting adult behavior. The study included 81 male Wistar rats.
