TLDR Dutasteride may help protect neurons and reduce inflammation in Parkinson's disease.
The study investigates the neuroprotective and immunomodulatory effects of 5α-reductase inhibitors, finasteride and dutasteride, in Parkinson’s disease (PD) models using 60 male mice. Dutasteride was found to be more effective than finasteride in preventing MPTP-induced damage to dopamine neurons and reducing inflammation in the myenteric plexus. Dutasteride also significantly inhibited proinflammatory responses and mitochondrial dysfunction in human monocytic cells. The findings suggest that dutasteride could be a promising therapeutic agent for PD due to its ability to enhance endogenous estrogen biosynthesis and mitigate mitochondrial dysfunctions.

community We are manipulating our hormones, surely it's prudent to track bloodwork ?

      in Finasteride/Dutasteride  64 upvotes 8 months ago
The conversation discusses whether individuals using hair loss treatments like Dutasteride (Dut) or Finasteride (Fin) should regularly check their hormone levels through bloodwork. Some argue it's important to monitor the effects of these medications on hormone levels, while others believe it's unnecessary if there are no side effects, citing cost and practicality concerns.

community Proof that finasteride messes with neurosteroids

      in Research/Science  230 upvotes 5 months ago
Finasteride can impact neurosteroids, potentially causing depression and other side effects in some users. Despite these concerns, many continue using it for hair loss, with some switching to topical applications to mitigate side effects.

The release of a study on 5a-reductase inhibitors (finasteride and dutasteride) which showed an increased risk of depression, dementia, decreased libido, and reduced semen load as potential side effects; discussion around other forms of hair loss treatments such as topical minoxidil, RU58841, or opting to accept baldness; and advice to consider professional help for deeper issues related to hair loss.

community DHT/Testosterone levels in scalp Fin VS Dut.

      in Finasteride/Dutasteride  60 upvotes 5 months ago
Dutasteride raises scalp testosterone by 99%, which may not be ideal for those sensitive to all androgens. Some argue finasteride's balancing act might be better, while others believe dutasteride is superior for hair regrowth.
