TLDR Improper use of minoxidil can cause excessive hair growth.
This case report highlights the risk of systemic absorption and hypertrichosis from improper use of topical minoxidil, particularly when combined with scalp occlusion. A 28-year-old woman with androgenetic and traction alopecia experienced excessive hair growth on her face, arms, and legs after using 5% minoxidil spray, PRP therapy, and LED treatment. Her use of a wig and tight night cap likely increased minoxidil absorption. Discontinuation of minoxidil and laser hair removal resolved the hypertrichosis. The study emphasizes the need for proper patient education on minoxidil application to prevent adverse effects and suggests further research on absorption-enhancing factors.
