TLDR Lower zinc and copper and higher cadmium in hair may be linked to non-insulin dependent diabetes.
The study measured the mineral content in the scalp hair of 69 patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and 74 controls to explore associations with diabetes. It found that zinc and copper levels were significantly lower in the NIDDM group compared to controls, while manganese, lead, cadmium, and aluminum levels were significantly higher. Multiple logistic regression analysis identified cadmium, zinc, and copper as significant variables associated with NIDDM, suggesting that lower levels of zinc and copper and higher levels of cadmium may be linked to the disease.
