TLDR The patch delivers more drugs through the skin effectively.
The study introduced a semi-dissolving microneedle (SDMN) patch incorporating TEMPO-oxidized bacterial cellulose nanofibers (TOBCNs) to enhance transdermal drug delivery. The patch featured a two-layer structure with a water-soluble needle layer and an insoluble backing layer containing TOBCNs, which acted as drug reservoirs. In vitro studies using porcine skin demonstrated that the SDMN patch significantly improved the delivery of both small hydrophilic molecules and larger lipophilic compounds, achieving 5.8 times higher permeation of fluorescein compared to controls. The study concluded that the SDMN patch could serve as a versatile and effective transdermal delivery system, although the experiments were conducted with a small sample size of 2, indicating preliminary findings.
