TLDR AL136131.3 slows hair growth by affecting energy processes in hair loss.
The study investigates the role of long non-coding RNA AL136131.3 in androgenetic alopecia (AGA) by analyzing miniaturized and normal hair follicles from 10 AGA patients. It identifies 378 mRNAs and 137 lncRNAs with differential expression between these follicles. AL136131.3, among others, is up-regulated in miniaturized follicles and is linked to fructose and mannose metabolism pathways. The study finds that overexpression of AL136131.3 inhibits hair shaft growth, accelerates the transition of hair follicles into the catagen phase, and affects glycolysis-related genes PPARγ and PKM, suggesting its inhibitory role in hair growth in AGA.
