TLDR Liver stem cells keep their basic functions even in inflamed liver tissue.
The study examines mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from chronically inflamed liver tissues compared to those from healthy livers, involving 6 healthy and 12 pathological samples. It finds that despite chronic inflammation, MSCs retain their basic cellular properties, such as proliferation, migration, and expression of standard MSC markers. Differences were noted in immune checkpoints and toll-like receptors, suggesting adaptations to the inflammatory environment. The findings indicate that liver-derived MSCs could be viable for cell therapy in liver diseases, although further research with larger sample sizes is needed to confirm these results.
