TLDR Androstenedione is better than testosterone for diagnosing PCOS in Indian women.
This study found that androstenedione (A4) measured through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is more effective in diagnosing polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in Indian women than testosterone (T). Elevated levels of A4 and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) were observed in 75% of hyperandrogenic women with normal T levels. A4 had the highest diagnostic accuracy with an AUC of 0.89. The findings suggest that A4 is a valuable marker for diagnosing hyperandrogenism in PCOS, but further research on androgen profiles and their cost-effectiveness is needed.
