Mandy M. Thomas, Nicolette Nadene Houreld
TLDR Laser hair removal is popular for long-term hair reduction but carries risks, requiring well-trained operators and better regulations, especially in South Africa.
Laser hair removal, based on selective photothermolysis, was effective but carried risks, necessitating proper training and regulation. The review highlighted the importance of wavelength selection, pulse duration, and energy density for safe and effective treatment. Different lasers were suitable for various skin types, with diode lasers becoming the gold standard due to high patient satisfaction and low adverse events in studies involving 368 and 71 patients. Regulatory standards varied globally, with some regions like South Africa lacking regulations, posing risks. The review emphasized the need for standardized training and regulation to ensure safety and minimize complications, noting that approximately 30% of issues were due to non-medical personnel.
