TLDR L-Carnitine-L-tartrate may help hair grow and prevent hair loss.
The study from 2007 explored the effects of L-Carnitine-L-tartrate (CT) on human hair growth in vitro. Human hair follicles in the anagen VI stage were treated with various concentrations of CT for 9 days. The results indicated that low concentrations of CT (0.5 µM and 5 µM) significantly stimulated hair shaft elongation and prolonged the anagen phase, while higher concentrations (500 µM) were inhibitory. CT also reduced apoptosis and upregulated proliferation in hair matrix keratinocytes, and downregulated factors associated with the transition to the catagen phase. The study concluded that CT has the potential to be used as a treatment for hair loss conditions by promoting hair growth and delaying follicle regression.
