TLDR c-kit affects hair growth and color in alopecia areata and androgenetic alopecia.
This study investigated the potential involvement of the stem cell factor receptor c-kit in alopecia areata (AAR) and androgenetic alopecia (AGA). The study analyzed scalp biopsy specimens from 14 AAR patients, 18 AGA patients, and 6 control subjects with other diseases. The study found that c-kit is expressed in the cells responsible for hair growth and color in the hair follicle, and that the SCF/c-kit signaling pathway may be involved in the pathological processes of AAR and AGA. The study used histopathological, immunohistochemical, and semiquantitative analyses to investigate c-kit expression.

A 30-year-old woman experiencing rapid hair loss is using 5% Minoxidil, Saw Palmetto, vitamins, and Nizoral, but is advised to see a dermatologist as her symptoms may indicate a condition other than androgenetic alopecia, such as alopecia areata or a thyroid issue. Many suggest a biopsy and blood tests to determine the underlying cause.
