TLDR Vitamin D3 is a safe and effective alternative to steroids for treating alopecia areata, with fewer side effects.
This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of intralesional vitamin D3 compared to triamcinolone acetonide (TAC) in treating alopecia areata in 40 patients, divided into two groups of 20. Both treatments resulted in significant hair regrowth over 20 weeks, with no statistically significant difference in regrowth scores between the two. TAC had a slightly higher mean regrowth score, but vitamin D3 showed potential as a viable alternative due to fewer side effects. The study noted that lesion location influenced outcomes, with vitamin D3 performing better on frontal and temporal lesions. Vitamin D3 also caused less burning pain than TAC, though it resulted in more tender swelling and itching. The findings suggest vitamin D3 as a safe and effective alternative to steroids, warranting further research on long-term effects and the role of serum vitamin D levels.
