TLDR New treatments for skin conditions in children include a preferred drug for birthmark reduction, proactive creams for eczema and vitiligo, a safe psoriasis medication, and special tissues and socks for eczema and fungal infections.
As of 2010, pediatric dermatology had seen advancements in treatment options despite the limited clinical trials for new drugs in children. Oral propranolol had become the preferred treatment for infantile hemangiomas. For atopic dermatitis, a proactive approach using topical calcineurin inhibitors, especially tacrolimus, was effective in preventing disease exacerbation and treating vitiligo on sensitive areas like eyelids. Etanercept was found to be a safe and effective biologic drug for children and adolescents with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. Additionally, engineered tissues with antimicrobial properties and 5-finger socks were being utilized to treat eczema, fungal diseases, and athlete's foot in pediatric patients.
