TLDR About one-third of dermatology patients in Ankara, Turkey use unconventional treatments for skin issues.
In a study of 1006 dermatology outpatients in Ankara, Turkey, 33.5% reported using unconventional therapies for skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, and fungal infections. The therapies included humectants, cologne, spiritual healing, and herbs, with specific remedies associated with certain conditions, like cologne for generalized pruritus and garlic for alopecia areata. The use of these therapies was not significantly influenced by sex, age, or education status. The study suggests that patients may turn to unconventional treatments due to dissatisfaction with conventional options and the psychosocial impact of their conditions. Dermatologists are encouraged to be aware of this trend to ensure patient safety and provide appropriate care.
