TLDR Pregnant women with PCOS have higher levels of Neurokinin B in the placenta, especially with female babies.
The study involved 68 women, 31 with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and 37 controls. It found that placental mRNA expression of Neurokinin B (NKB) was significantly higher in PCOS pregnancies with female offspring compared to controls. NKB expression was also higher in pregnancies with male fetuses, regardless of PCOS. NKB was positively correlated with umbilical cord Free Androgen Index (FAI) and Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH), and there was a strong positive correlation between NKB and KISS1 expression. Women with PCOS had higher serum AMH and FAI and lower Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) than controls. The findings suggest that NKB might be involved in the PCOS-related placental dysfunction and warrant further investigation.
