TLDR Tectona grandis leaf extracts, especially with propylene glycol, may be promising for topical hair loss treatments.
The study examined the in vitro skin penetration of two 5α-reductase inhibitors from Tectona grandis leaf extracts, focusing on their potential for hair loss treatments. Using the Franz diffusion cell model, it was found that compound 1 had significantly higher skin penetration than compound 2, attributed to its greater hydrophobicity. Both compounds showed poor solubility in water but improved solubility in HEPES buffer with 2% Tween 20, and their penetration was enhanced by propylene glycol (PG). After 24 hours, compound 1 achieved a penetration of 12.72% in PG, while compound 2 reached 11.30%. These findings suggest that T. grandis extracts, especially with PG, could be promising for developing topical hair loss treatments.
