TLDR Store Tectona grandis leaf extracts in slightly acidic, light-protected conditions for best stability.
This study investigated the stability of two 5α-reductase inhibitors, (+)-eperua-8,13-dien-15-oic acid and (+)-eperua-7,13-dien-15-oic acid, found in Tectona grandis leaf extracts under various conditions. The stability was tested in different solvent systems, pH levels, temperatures, and light exposures using HPLC analysis. The compounds were more stable in acidic solutions and degraded faster in neutral or basic environments, with light exposure particularly affecting compound 1. High temperatures also accelerated degradation, but the presence of PG helped minimize this when light was excluded. The calculated shelf-life of the extracts was 1.48 years, suggesting that they should be stored in non-aqueous or slightly acidic solutions with light protection. This information is valuable for developing future anti-hair loss medications.

      FCE 28260: A Forgotten 5α-Reductase Inhibitor

FCE 28260 (PNU 156765), an under-explored 5α-reductase inhibitor, showcases promising results in research by Giudici et al., outperforming well-known treatments like Finasteride in reducing the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Its superior efficacy, demonstrated through lower IC50 values in both natural and human recombinant enzyme studies, suggests it could offer more effective management of DHT-related conditions. Additionally, its lower molecular weight hints at better potential for topical application, potentially offering advantages in treating conditions such as androgenic alopecia. Despite its potential, it has not advanced in development, possibly due to financial limitations, leaving its therapeutic prospects and side effect profile largely unexplored.
