The Impact of Carrying Heavy Loads on the Donkeys' Health in Benadir Region, Somalia

The study conducted in the Benadir region of Somalia found that donkeys used for heavy load carrying suffer significant health issues, including lesions and hair loss. The majority of respondents (94%) acknowledged that donkeys experience pain, and 80% of owners disagreed with the practice of overloading. Key factors contributing to these health problems include poorly made carts, inadequate harnessing standards, lack of animal welfare knowledge, and economic dependence on donkey labor. The study recommends that the Ministry of Livestock implement regulations to improve donkey health and welfare.
