TLDR Metformin helps manage weight, blood pressure, and hormonal imbalances in PCOS patients.
In a randomized control trial involving 100 patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), metformin therapy was found to be effective in reducing clinical and hormonal indices associated with the condition. The study, conducted over nine months, divided participants into two groups: Group I (50 patients) received metformin (500 mg) three times daily, while Group II (50 patients) received pioglitazone (30 mg) three times daily. Results showed that metformin led to significant decreases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, hair loss (40% of patients), oligomenorrhea (46%), body weight, waist circumference, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) levels. Pioglitazone was found to significantly reduce triglyceride levels. Both treatments controlled serum insulin, acne, menstrual disturbances, and fasting blood sugar. The study concluded that metformin is effective in managing weight, blood pressure, BMI, and hormonal imbalances in PCOS patients, with pioglitazone serving as an alternative treatment.
