TLDR Alopecia areata greatly harms quality of life, causing emotional and social issues.
The systematic literature review found that alopecia areata (AA) significantly decreased patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL), affecting social, emotional, and functional aspects. Across 37 studies, AA was linked to anxiety, depression, acute stress, and alexithymia in 23-50% of patients. The review highlighted the lack of AA-specific clinical outcome assessment tools and emphasized the need for developing such tools to better understand AA's full impact. It also noted that more severe hair loss correlated with worse social function scores, and patients with severe AA experienced greater emotional distress. The review called for comprehensive management strategies addressing both physical and psychological aspects of AA.
