TLDR Alopecia areata severely impacts quality of life, causing anxiety, depression, and work impairment.
This study surveyed 2083 patients with alopecia areata (AA) and 239 dermatologists across five European countries to compare physician-assessed and patient self-rated AA severity and its impact on quality of life (QoL). In 78.5% of cases, there was agreement between patient and physician severity ratings. Higher physician-rated AA severity correlated with increased patient-reported burden, including anxiety, depression, and work/activity impairment. The study underscores the significant impact of AA beyond hair loss, particularly for severe cases, and suggests that these insights could guide better treatment strategies.
