TLDR IL-15 is key for T cell function and could help improve treatments for immune-related diseases.
IL-15 is a cytokine crucial for the development and maintenance of NK cells and memory CD8+ T cells, and it plays a significant role in the activation and function of various T cell types, including virtual memory T cells and γδ T cells. It is particularly important for TCR-independent activation of T cells, which is implicated in the immunopathogenesis of diseases such as viral infections and chronic inflammatory conditions. Understanding IL-15's role in T-cell responses can help optimize therapeutic strategies to reduce T cell-mediated host injury. This review discusses recent advancements in understanding IL-15's impact on T cell responses and disease processes.
