TLDR Adding insulin-like growth factor 1 and bone marrow-derived stem cells to a collagen-chitosan scaffold helps wounds heal faster and regrows hair follicles.
In this study, the researchers investigated the effects of incorporating insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) into a collagen-chitosan scaffold on wound healing and hair follicle regeneration. They found that the IGF1- and BM-MSC-incorporating scaffolds promoted wound healing and effectively regenerated hair follicles in a rat model of full-thickness skin injury. The scaffolds also inhibited inflammatory cytokines during wound healing. In vitro experiments showed that IGF1 promoted the proliferation and migration of BM-MSCs. These findings suggest that the topical application of IGF1 and BM-MSCs in collagen-chitosan scaffolds could be a feasible and effective therapeutic approach for improving functional wound healing.
