TLDR Most skin tumors in the study were benign, with squamous cell carcinoma being the most common malignant type.
The study conducted at a private Medical College in coastal Andhra from July 2018 to June 2020 analyzed 71 cases of skin and adnexal tumors. It found that 61% (43 cases) were benign and 39% (28 cases) were malignant. Of the benign tumors, 46.5% were of skin appendages, 34.9% were of epidermal origin, and 18.6% were melanocytic. In contrast, among the malignant tumors, 89.3% were epidermal, 7.1% were melanocytic, and 3.6% were of skin appendage origin. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most common malignant tumor, accounting for 42.9% of such cases. The study concluded that benign tumors are more common than malignant ones, with squamous cell carcinoma being the most prevalent malignant skin tumor, followed by basal cell carcinoma and verrucous carcinoma. Benign tumors most frequently originated from the epidermis, then from sweat glands and hair follicle adnexa.
