TLDR Hair area varies with age and sex, but hair index and medullary index do not.
The study investigated the micro-morphological parameters of Thai scalp hair—hair index (HI), hair area (HA), and medullary index (MI)—in relation to age and sex differences using samples from 340 unrelated Thai cadavers. The results showed that HI and MI did not significantly differ by age or sex. However, HA was significantly different between males and females aged 50-69 years and increased during the early twenties before gradually decreasing until ≥80 years. These findings suggested that HA could be useful in forensic, medical, and anthropological investigations.
