TLDR A woman with alopecia regrew her hair after taking a higher dose of tocilizumab.
The document described a 21-year-old woman with alopecia areata (AA) who showed significant hair regrowth while being treated with a higher dose of tocilizumab (TCZ) for posterior uveitis. TCZ is a monoclonal antibody that inhibits interleukin-6 (IL-6), a cytokine implicated in AA. Initially, her AA worsened on TCZ, but after restarting at a higher dose, she achieved almost complete hair regrowth within 4 months. This case suggests a potential role for IL-6 blockade in treating AA, but the exact mechanisms by which TCZ affects hair follicle growth are not fully understood, necessitating further research. The report also notes the possibility that the hair regrowth could have occurred spontaneously and was not necessarily related to IL-6 modulation.
