Hair Diameter Measurement Methods: Micrometer Caliper Versus Phototrichogram

Jae Hyun Park, Yeh Hong Ho, Kotchamol Manonukul
TLDR The phototrichogram is better for measuring hair thickness.
This study compared hair diameter measurement methods using a micrometer caliper and a Folliscope phototrichogram in 10 female volunteers. Hair thickness was measured at three scalp sites and at three positions along the hair length. Results showed that the phototrichogram consistently measured thicker hair diameters (average 108.78±19.97 μm) compared to the caliper (average 76.90±12.29 μm), with significant differences across all sites (P<0.001). The study concludes that the phototrichogram is clinically useful for assessing hair thickness in patients with hair loss and those undergoing hair transplantation.
