TLDR Different areas of the scalp have varying hair thickness, useful for different types of hair transplant needs.
In a 2017 study, researchers measured hair diameter in different regions of the safe donor area in 38 non-alopecic Korean subjects (19 males and 19 females). They found significant differences in hair diameter across seven zones, with hair becoming thinner from zone 3 to zone 7. The study concluded that zones 4 to 7 are better for surgeries requiring thinner hair, such as eyebrow, eyelash, and female hairline correction, while zones 1 to 3 are suitable for surgeries needing thicker hair, like male and female pattern hair loss. This information is useful for planning hair transplant surgery and selecting the best donor region.
