TLDR Epidermal growth factor (EGF) boosts the growth of hair follicle cells.
The study observed the growth kinetics of dermal papilla cells and dermal sheath cells from human hair follicles in vitro, focusing on the effect of epidermal growth factor (EGF). The cells were cultured and stimulated with various factors, including EGF, and their growth was monitored. Results showed that all cell types exhibited three growth phases: a stagnant phase, a log growth phase, and a slow growth phase. EGF significantly stimulated the growth of these cells, particularly dermal sheath cells. The study concluded that EGF in the culture medium effectively promoted the growth of mesenchymal cells, supporting its use for culturing epithelial and dermal cells from hair follicles and skin.
