TLDR Ligustrum lucidum may boost hair growth by maintaining key growth factors.
The study investigated the molecular mechanism of hair growth stimulated by Chinese herbs, focusing on the expression of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mRNA in mouse vibrissa follicles. It was found that HGF and VEGF mRNA were present in anagen follicles but not in catagen/telogen follicles, with their expression decreasing from early to late anagen. Notably, Ligustrum lucidum (A) was shown to maintain the expression of these growth factors in cultured follicles, suggesting its potential to upregulate HGF and VEGF, which are important for hair growth.
